With our dollar going up and HDD becoming cheaper. It wasn’t a surprise when CanadaComputer had a sale on the 1tb Hitachi for 80 CAD.

From Techreport

The latest Seagate 7200.12 only uses 2 X 500 GB platter size while the Hitachi uses 5 X 200 GB. The first 1TB was 5 X 200 GB and now it only takes 2 X 500 GB to make a 1TB. So its probably causes more noise/heat and of course less dense data because more platter. Western Digital Black drives are excellent for performance. While their Green drive are excellent for storage file and external enclosure. The 1TB Green range from 100-110 CAD atm but they only have RPM of 5400 RPM.

Its a good deal if you are in need of storage space. I also picked up an external enclosure and a pack of dvd r (it was on sale).

The HDD was for my sister as she ran out of space on her Laptop and needed space. Too bad her laptop doesn’t have eSata port. Most new laptops have those now…

As for the external enclosure Vantec makes pretty decent enclosure, it was the cheapest one on CC with eSata and supports 1 TB drive, 30~ CAD. A side note when buying hdd for desktop, check you have the ports available, I have seen people (specially on RFD) buy hdd and later to find out they don’t have a available port. There is a solution but its better to have thought of that before you made the purchase just incase you don’t want to spend extra to free up the port. Choosing a HDD to put in a enclosure should be cool because most enclosure are passive cooling and of course you want one to be energy efficient!

    lol, I thought it was $80 for external. That happened to me when buying the wrong HDD. My dad bought a sata while my computer is like 8 years old that still uses ide.
    Just wondering, say I have a HDD and I want it to use it as external like what you did, but then the HDD already has windows installed. Is that fine?

    I’m not exactly sure what you are asking ^^;;;
    Like the external hdd is going to include your booting windows? I think it is possible with eSata because the computer like sees it like at sata hdd. But its not recommend because if you want to use the hdd like you have to shutdown your computer disconnect the hdd to use it on another computer. When you want to use your computer, have to plug it back in or windows wont boot.

    The beauty of eSata is hotswap with AHCI enable! Not only do you have a portable drive now but one with great transfer speed!

    humm….I mean that currently I have two HDD. My new hdd is a slave and a clone of my original hdd, so it already has windows in it. But, I want to set that as an external so I can plug it to other computers. Therefore, to do so, do i need to format that hdd or is it okay to plug it into an enclosure and use it as is.

    ya you could pretty much just put that hdd in an enclosure and use it as it is. just wondering how are you cloning the drive by windows? or third party application? and is it auto?

    my dad’s friend did it for me by using a third party application, but didn’t catch on fast enough because it was in chinese

    Congrats!!!! That’s a really great price. I’ve often contemplated about getting some external memory just to back up my unstable laptop :/
